2014 Summer Reading Lists
ALSC's Quicklists Consulting Committee has updated our Summer Reading Lists with new and exciting titles!
The lists are full of book titles to keep children engaged in reading
throughout the summer. Three Summer Reading book lists are available
for K-2nd, 3rd- 5th and 6th-8th grade students.
Each list is available here to download for free in color and black
and white. Lists can be customized to include library information,
summer hours and summer reading programs for children before making
copies available to schools and patrons.
The Summer Reading List was compiled and annotated by ALSC’s
Quicklists Consulting Committee and School-Age Programs and Services
Committee through a 2013 Carnegie Whitney Grant funded by the American
Library Association Publishing Committee. The 2014 list was updated by
ALSC’s Quicklists Consulting Committee.

Our School Garden! by Rick Swann, Christy Hale (Illustrations)
One of my goals someday is to have a "school garden". A dear friend has started on e at her school and it has created a great community project. Here is a book to inspire you!
New city. New school. Michael is feeling all alone—until he discovers the school garden! There’s so many ways to learn, and so much work to do. Taste a leaf? Mmm, nice and tangy hot. Dig for bugs? “Roly-poly!” he yells. But the garden is much more than activities outdoors: making school garden stone soup, writing Found Poems and solving garden riddles, getting involved in community projects such as Harvest Day, food bank donations, and spring plant sales. Each season creates a new way to learn, explore, discover and make friends.
School librarian and gardener Rick Swann, in his picture book debut, describes the wonder of connecting with nature and the joy of growing and eating one’s own harvest. Award-winning artist Christy Hale captures the brilliant color of the season and the harvest. This is the perfect book to read alone, as well as share in the classroom or with the entire family.

Flight of the Honey Bee. Huber, Raymond
A tiny honey bee emerges from the hive for the first time. Using sunlight, landmarks, and scents to remember the path, she goes in search of pollen and nectar to share with the thousands of other bees in her hive. She uses her powerful sense of smell to locate the flowers that sustain her, avoids birds that might eat her, and returns home to share her finds with her many sisters. Nature lovers and scientists-to-be are invited to explore the fascinating life of a honey bee. The author's website has some fun activities http://www.raymondhuber.co.nz/
